Interview with author
Why is your book in a can?
I wanted to illustrate the point that we need to think in cans. Most of us think in can’ts. Every time we come to a crossroad or a new opportunity in our life we think of all the reasons we can’t do something. Can’t is the root of all undesirable outcomes. Can, on the other hand, opens possibilities and causes us to look at the alternatives that offer a payoff. My book is in a can because I believe in the power of affirming action when it comes to change. To be able to capture the magnitude and electricity of change, we have to be an opener—a “why not?” person. Unlocking the tremendous potential that lies within all of us is not only the job of the opener—it is our responsibility as leaders.
What do you want people to gain from your book?
In a word, ability. The ability to gain hope, the action of believing in our abilities; faith, the unseen power of God’s hand in the everyday action of our gifts; fearlessness, the ability to act in accordance with our faith; transition, an understanding of change and how little power it has until we give it power; integrity, doing and living what is good and just; love, our need to give unselfishly; trust, the bravery to step out when we believe there is no step; laughter, joy from within; whack, the manifestation of our joy; and opener, a leader that who gains the abilities of the different cans.
What inspired you to write this book?
The story behind this is in the book. But in a nutshell, a friend needed to grow past the negative outcomes of change that had taken place in his life. I also have an intense desire to be an opener. Everyone is aware of the intense power of antibiotics and their healing nature. If you have ever had an infection, chances are your physician recommended taking a prescription so that you would be cured. This book presents my way of curing the negative effects that change can cause.
